In the Swiss Wallis, on the south side of the Rhône valley, you will find the Mattertal. This valley is surrounded by the highest mountains of the Alps, like the Weisshorn and the Mischabel range. The most spectacular mountains are located south of Zermatt, on the border with Italy, like the Matterhorn for example. The main places in the region are St. Niklaus, Randa, Täsch and Zermatt. The pistes are covered in lovely powdery snow which makes the most challenging descents possible.
Good skiers will find 138 km signposted pistes in the Zermatt ski area. The pedestrian streets in Zermatt ensure that the rustic character is preserved (the cars are parked 5 km further in Täsch). The three large ski areas in the Mattertal and region are not ideally connected, but are accessible with an electric bus. There are fabulous red and blue pistes on the mountain flanks of the Matterhorn. Experienced skiers will enjoy the black pistes like the 'Triftji', the prettiest in the Oberwallis region.
Visp, the ski resort connected to the Mattertal, offers lots of facilities for a diversified winter sports holiday in the Rhône valley with family or friends. The large ski area is three kilometres away from the village and offers runs for every level. Langlaufers will find a few loipes and walkers will enjoy the pretty surroundings on ten paths. Your chalet in the Mattertal is the ideal base for a lovely winter sports holiday.
